Place-based perceptions, resilience and adaptation to climate change by smallholder farmers in rural South Africa

Unprecedented global climate change caused by human actions is becoming a challenge to agricultural systems’ ability meet and sustain production demands for food raw materials the increasing world population. Climate has not spared district, resulting in extreme weather events such as droughts, erratic rainfalls frosty winter days within district. Smallholder agriculture Sub-Saharan Africa mainly dependent on rainfed agriculture, which increased uncertainty due variability of climate. This study assesses management adaptation resilience strategies smallholder farmers Joe Gqabi District Municipality Eastern Cape, South Africa. The revealed significant response farmers, involved adoption numerous strategies. choice among community members influenced diversity factors amongst are; household demographic characteristics, access information technology, assets endowment farmers’ perception change.
